Europe opens mixed as Johnson pushes Brexit deal

European markets opened mixed on Tuesday as investors monitor Brexit developments. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is making a final push for passing his Brexit deal with Brussels with MPs set to debate the Withdrawal Agreement Bill later in the day.

The DAX gained modestly at the open, rising just 0.05%. The CAC 40 fell 0.06%, while the FTSE 100 added 0.06%.

On the earnings front, UBS saw a 16% drop in profit in the third quarter compared to the previous year. Novartis reported a jump in sales and raised its earnings forecast. Shares of UBS climbed 2.32% at the start of trading, while Novartis advanced 0.76% in the first moments of the session.

The euro was down 0.03% against the dollar at 9:10 am CET, buying 1.11460 as the pound was virtually flat versus the greenback, going for 1.29640.
