WHO halts hydroxychloroquine trials for COVID-19

The World Health Organization announced on Saturday that it is halting trials of the anti-malaria hydroxychloroquine in treating patients with the coronavirus.

"These interim trial results show that hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir/ritonavir produce little or no reduction in the mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients when compared to standard of care. Solidarity trial investigators will interrupt the trials with immediate effect," the WHO said in a statement.

The WHO resumed clinical trials of the drug hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus treatment in early June. However, the organization said today's decision will not affect other studies in which hydroxychloroquine is used for non-hospitalized patients or as prophylaxis.
