Afghanistan approved the release of 400 Taliban prisoners to facilitate the peace negotiations, the country's Loya Jirga, a grand assembly convened to discuss important matters in the state, stated on Sunday.

The Taliban had previously conditioned the negotiations on freeing the incarcerated militants. "In order to remove the hurdles for the start of peace talks, stopping bloodshed, and for the good of the public, the Loya Jirga approves the release of 400 prisoners as demanded by the Taliban," the assembly member noted.

Earlier today, United States Defense Secretary Mark Esper revealed that the US plans to reduce the number of American soldiers in the Asian country to 5,000 until November.
