American Airlines to axe 19,000 jobs in October

American Airlines unveiled on Tuesday it plans to cut 19,000 jobs, taking effect on October 1 amid the federal aid to the company expiry.

"Today is the hardest message we have had to share so far – the announcement of involuntary staffing reductions effective October 1. The one possibility of avoiding these involuntary reductions on October 1 is a clean extension" of the aid, the airline said in a statement.

According to the Fort Worth-based carrier, the capacity in the fourth quarter is expected to be half of the last year's fourth trimester levels as travel demand remains weak due to the coronavirus pandemic.
