US to ban downloads of TikTok, WeChat on Sunday

Friday, 18. September 2020 13:40

The United States Commerce Department issued an order on Friday that will ban users in the US from downloading Chinese-owned apps TikTok and WeChat starting September 20.

The order might still be revoked by US President Donald Trump if TikTok owner ByteDance reaches a deal to sell its US operations to an American company, according to a statement. "Today’s actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said.

In the event a deal is not reached, the Commerce Department will order both apps to be removed from Google Play and Apple's App Store, so TikTok and WeChat will be inaccessible from the US.
