Facebook says 'independent' board to review Trump ban

Thursday, 21. January 2021 19:13

Facebook announced on Thursday that it is referring its decision to indefinitely suspend former President Donald Trump's account to its independent Oversight Board for review.

According to the social media giant, the Oversight Board was established in 2020 "to make the final call on some of the most difficult content decisions Facebook makes" and its decision cannot be overruled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg or anyone else at the company.

"We believe our decision was necessary and right. Given its significance, we think it is important for the board to review it and reach an independent judgment on whether it should be upheld. While we await the board’s decision, Mr. Trump’s access will remain suspended indefinitely," Facebook said in a blog post. Earlier, it was reported Facebook does not intend to lift the ban, which took effect following the January 6 Capitol riots.
