Iran extends UK flight ban until February 18

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced on Sunday it has extended the coronavirus-related flight ban to the United Kingdom until February 18.

According to the agency's head Touraj Dehqani Zanganeh, the decision was brought due to both a large number of newly detected COVID-19 cases across the UK as well as the recently discovered and more transmissible virus strain. The ban has been in effect since December last year.

The UK has reported nearly 40,000 positive cases in recent days, with the average number of deaths above 1,000. Next to Spain, the country is considered the epicenter of the pandemic in Europe despite tight lockdown measures.
