Biden overturns Trump's transgender military ban

United States President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday to overturn his predecessor's ban on transgender people serving in the military while pursuing hormone therapy or surgery.

The decision was widely expected given Biden's sharp criticism of the ban, while his newly appointed Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also shared his support for reversing the order last week. "If you’re fit and you’re qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve, and you can expect that I will support that throughout," Austin told senators.

Former President Donald Trump announced the ban on transgender people serving in the military "in any capacity" in July of 2017. The policy allowed transgender people already enlisted in the military to remain, however, it prevented new recruits from joining.
