Tuesday, 26. January 2021 08:02

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to ban travel as she claimed her country was "sitting on a powder keg" due to the spread of new COVID-19 variants, the Bild reported on Tuesday, saying Merkel made the remarks over the weekend to party colleagues.

Merkel also stated that it is uncertain if the ongoing lockdowns can be lifted in February and added new cases of the coronavirus could spread rapidly in Germany over the next few weeks. Calling for stricter measures, the chancellor described the current reaction to curbing COVID-19 as having "slipped out of control."

On Monday, Germany recorded 6,729 new cases of the coronavirus, the fewest since October, but economic data showed business sentiment has worsened amid the latest lockdown.
