Facebook to lift ban on Australian news pages

Facebook, Inc. told the Australian government on Tuesday it stands ready to reverse a ban on Australian news pages "in the coming days" after it blocked posting and sharing content created by local media outlets on its platform last week.

According to Treasurer of Australia Josh Frydenberg, the tech giant will "add further impetus for parties to engage in commercial negotiations outside the Code," aiming to "foster more sustainable public interest journalism in Australia."

Meanwhile, Facebook's Australia and New Zealand Managing Director William Easton said that the company is "satisfied that the Australian government has agreed to a number of changes and guarantees that address our core concerns about allowing commercial deals that recognize the value our platform provides to publishers relative to the value we receive from them."
