Markets in Europe closed with losses on Monday ahead of the United Kingdom's parliamentary vote on Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit agreement. In an attempt to get the deal approved, European Union officials promised May in a letter they will work towards ensuring that the Irish backstop provision is never triggered, which the UK prime minister described as "valuable assurances." However, the future of the agreement is still uncertain as May's coalition partner DUP, as well as former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, stressed they will vote against the withdrawal agreement.

The FTSE 100 fell 0.91% with Intercontinental plunging 5.40%. The DAX declined 0.29% as Wirecard dropped 2.75%. The CAC 40 ended 0.49% in the red with Atos, whose shares sank 5.64%, leading the losses. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed 0.55% lower. Amadeus IT Group, down 2.65%, was the worst performer on the pan-European index..

The euro added 0.12% against the dollar to sell for 1.1477 at 5:37 pm CET.
