European Council President Charles Michel said after the first day of the European Commission's (EUCO) meetings the Union supports a "speedy" resolution to the Cyprus problem.

He expressed solidarity for Cyprus and said the bloc welcomes Athens-Ankara talks and encourages the "deepening" of these talks, also warning Turkey against proceeding with the drilling on a maritime territory that Greece sees as its own.

The dispute between Greece and Turkey ensued once a Turkish vessel began oil and gas drilling in waters Greece has competing claims for leading the country to attempt to assert jurisdiction by holding military drills. Following the move, Erdogan vowed his government would not claim another nation's land, promising, however, he will never make concessions on territory Ankara sees as its own.
