Japan's capacity utilization sinks 2.9% in August

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry confirmed on Tuesday its initial findings about the change in industrial production for August, where output dropped 1.2% in the reporting month only and the annual decline was 4.7%. The prints for July were 1.3% on the positive side and 4.1% under neutral. The index of capacity utilization or operating ratio landed at 99.3 points on a seasonally adjusted basis, a decline of 2.9% for the month, after a 1.1% jump was registered in the previous update.

The measure dropped 4.8% to 92.4 in total terms year over year, against the prior advance of 2.5%. The indicator of capacity came in at 97.8 or unchanged from July and June and 0.7% lower than 12 months before. In the previous month the negative rate was 0.6%.

The seasonally adjusted index of the tertiary sector gained 0.4% compared to 0.1% growth one month before.
