Nissan's leadership is looking closely into a potential split from Renault amid turmoil over Carlos Ghosn's legal issues, stepping up contingency planning for the possibility of breaking up the alliance, the Financial Times reported.

These plans include changes to Nissan's board as well as splitting engineering and manufacturing within the 20-year old alliance, according to multiple sources.

Ghosn recently fled Japan, where he was awaiting trial over charges of financial misconduct. He is currently in Lebanon, claiming he is the victim of a conspiracy against him at Nissan.
