Honda announced on Friday it will exit Formula 1 at the end of 2021. The Japanese carmaker currently powers engines of Red Bull and AlphaTauri teams.

The company said the decision was made due to a "once-in-one-hundred-years period of great transformation" the auto industry is undergoing. "Honda will work together with Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri to continue competing with its utmost effort and strive for more victories all the way to the end of the 2021 season," the carmaker stated.

The decision means only Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault will remain as power unit suppliers in Formula 1. Under current rules, in case the two teams don't reach an agreement with any of the companies, Renault would be obliged to supply them with engines since it has the fewest customers in the compeition. Both Red Bull and AlphaTauri signed an agreement to compete in Formula 1 until the end of 2025.
