Perry resigns 'effective later this year'

United States Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said in a video posted on his official Twitter account that he is leaving "the coolest job in the world" and that he would return to his home state and "treasure the memories" of accomplishments. The former governor of Texas made no mention of the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump which lately pushed him to center stage as he was subpoenaed by committees in the House of Representatives that are responsible for running the process. The resignation will be "effective later this year," Perry revealed after Trump said he would depart at year-end.

The Wall Street Journal learned from an anonymous source that the change has been planned for months regardless of the current political turmoil. The US has "achieved a goal of energy independence", according to the energy secretary, who cited the first exports of natural gas in more than six decades.
