Europe opens with gains on vaccine hopes

Markets in Europe opened higher on Thursday on coronavirus vaccine optimism after a study showed the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine candidate showed promising results in its early stage trial. Meanwhile, investors awaited economic data, including unemployment figures from the EU.

The FTSE 100 rose 0.61% at 9:00 am CET. IAG Group led the gains, surging 4.13% at 9:01 after reports emerged the UK will ease quarantine rules.

The DAX jumped 1.04% at 9:04 am CET with RWE, up 1.70%, as the best performer.

The CAC 40 climbed 0.83% at 9:01 am CET as Unibail-Rodamco rallied 2.99% at 9:02 am CET.

The euro added 0.18% against the dollar to sell for 1.12710 at 9:02 am CET and the pound was up 0.14% compared to the greenback, going for 1.24936 at 9:03 am CET.
