EU starts legal action against UK over Brexit bill

Thursday, 01. October 2020 11:05

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday that the European Union was sending a letter of formal notice to the United Kingdom over London's Internal Market Bill, the first step in an infringement procedure. The bloc previously gave the UK until the end of September to abandon the bill, which aims to override parts of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

Von der Leyen stated that the bill was "by its very nature a breach of obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement." She also warned that, if adopted, it will be "in full contradiction to the protocol of Ireland-Northern Ireland." She added that the EU was inviting the UK "to send its observations within a month," while the Commission will continue to implement the agreement.
