United States district judge Henry Morgan said on Monday that American technology conglomerate Cisco Systems Inc. is obliged to pay $1.9 billion after being accused of violating official patents related to computer network security functions.

Cisco infringed four patents owned by Centripetal Networks Inc. and the judge said Centripetal was owed $755.8 million for the usage of the invention. He also said this infringement was "willful and egregious."

Cisco now has to pay a 10% royalty on the sales of its products in the next three years. After that, the company will have to pay 5% in royalties for three years.
