Delta Air Lines announced on Thursday its partnership with International Business Machines Corp. to work on migrating Delta's data and applications, including the Fly Delta mobile app, to cloud-based servers.

The contract is said to run through at least 2024. The agreement also involves staff training of over 1,000 IT employees, in order for the air carrier to be able to manage and support the cloud system in-house.

"This agreement expands our longstanding relationship with Delta Air Lines to help them accelerate and navigate their ambitious digital transformation journey. This long-term project will apply the power of IBM’s hybrid cloud approach, enabling Delta to develop applications once and deploy them anywhere, integrate security across the breadth of their IT estate, and automate operations with management visibility," IBM senior vice president Mark Foster said.
