Silver rises to highest since August

Precious metals gained on Monday despite risk appetite in the markets, evident from an advance in stocks. Spot silver reached $15.48 per ounce, the highest level since August 9.

The asset class has enjoyed the weakening in expectations for interest rate increases in the United States, but also the Eurozone. Rising borrowing costs provide more returns for fixed-term investments, while gold is seen mostly as a safe haven. The demand for it normally rises with inflation, as traders tend to preserve value, while the recent advance is more closely tied to a burst of volatility in equity markets.

The yellow metal rose by a modest 0.21% to $1,282.61 per ounce at 12:00 pm CET. The session high, $1,283.49 was the strongest mark since June 19. Silver was 0.44% in the green at $15.44 for one troy ounce. The two precious metals were still down 1.58% and 8.74%, respectively, from the beginning of the year. Platinum traded 0.27% up at $794.98 and palladium added 0.28% to change hands for $1,238.07 per ounce.
