Outlook: Economic data, earnings reports

Here's the tentative outlook of the expected data and earnings reports for February 12, 2016.

Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) published food price index data, showing a rise of food prices of concerning 2.0%, the highest monthly rise since June of 2013. Fruit and vegetables jumped 4.4%, with seasonally higher prices of apples, strawberries and tomatoes.

"Food prices usually rise in January due to seasonally higher fruit and vegetable prices – after adjusting for seasonality, food prices rose 0.4 percent," said the SNZ press release, and added: "Despite the rise in monthly food prices, prices are still 0.6 percent lower than a year ago."

Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Glenn Stevens is to hold a speech ahead of market opening Down Under. The governor is to appear before the Parliament's House of Representatives' Standing Committee on Economics, ten days after RBA decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 2.0%. Australia has seen annual inflation rate of 1.7%.

Among many companies expected to publish their fourth quarter and annual reports, the following could be most interesting: ITT Corporation, United Overseas Bank, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Universal Security Instruments, Inc., USA Technologies, Newcrest Mining Ltd., LifePoint Health, Ventas.
