Facebook to fight against meddling in US elections

Facebook Inc. said on Monday that it would upgrade transparency, policy on misinformation and the tools to fight it, and the protection against foreign interference. The measures, focused on next year's elections in the United States, include shields for candidates and elected officials and labeling media organizations that are wholly or partially under the editorial control of their government.

Representatives of the social media operator said "significant investments have been made since 2016 in the identification of threats and vulnerabilities combating fake news and fake accounts. The section with political advertisements will get a US presidential candidate spend tracker, according to the statement.

"This morning we removed four separate networks of accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior. Three of them originated in Iran and one in Russia. They targeted the US, North Africa and Latin America," the update adds. Facebook is banning paid ads that suggest voting is useless or advise people not to vote, it revealed.
