Apple Inc.'s Research app was made available for download from the App Store on Thursday. Through the application, which was announced at the Apple event in early September, users of the iPhone and Apple Watch are able to enroll in the Apple Heart and Movement, Women’s Health and Hearing studies.

According to Apple, those enrolled contribute useful data to medical research, including "movement, heart rate and noise levels - captured during everyday activities, from taking a walk to attending a concert."

"Participants on the Research app have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact that could lead to new discoveries and help millions lead healthier lives," said Apple COO Jeff Williams.
