Wall Street curbs some losses at close

Thursday, 20. February 2020 22:00

Indices on Wall Street closed in the red on Thursday, although somewhat recovering from a sharp drop in late morning in which major companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Goldman Sachs and Disney, all tumbled over 1% leading the Dow to daily lows of over 350 points below yesterday's close. The focus was on Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida's statement that the central bank intends to hold interest rates for a while, despite trade uncertainties and potential negative effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index was down 0.44% at the end of the session, losing 130 points. Intel was the biggest loser, sliding 2.47%, followed by Goldman Sach and Microsoft, down 1.94% and 1.53%, respectively. Apple was 1.03% in the red.

The Nasdaq 100 declined by 0.94%, led by online car auctioning firm Copart's fall of 6.89%, while the S&P 500 finished contracting 0.38%, as ViacomCBS tanked 17.89% following a downbeat earnings report.

The euro traded flat against the dollar, buying $1.07890 at 4:03 pm ET.
