Germany's Health Minister Jens Spahn announced on Sunday his country would become the first in Europe to start using the same experimental antibodies treatment that helped former United States President Donald Trump to recover from the COVID-19.

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Spahn revealed the government bought 200,000 doses for €400 million, equivalent to €2,000 per dose. The antibody cocktails will now be distributed across the country's university hospitals. "They work like a passive vaccination. Administering these antibodies in the early stages can help high-risk patients avoid a more serious progression," Spahn explained.

The minister hasn't disclosed the name of the company from which the German government acquired the therapy. However, it is known that Trump was treated with antibody therapy REGN-COV2, developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. Next to Regeneron, Eli Lilly and Co. has developed a similar product.
