European markets close mostly flat

Shares on major European stock markets ended the session on Friday mostly flat. Markets remained subdued despite the United States economy adding another 1.8 million jobs in July, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In other news, tensions continued to rise between China and the US, with the US Treasury Department slapping sanctions on Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam.

The DAX gained 0.66% as Deutsche Telekom led the gains. The CAC 40 and the FTSE 100 closed flat. The euro lost 0.76% against the dollar at 5:35 pm CET, buying 1.17876. At the same time, the pound was down 0.75% versus the US currency, going for 1.30510.
