The truck division of German multinational automotive corporation Daimler AG announced on Friday it has invested in lidar developer Luminar in order to broaden its production of autonomous trucks. Lidar is a method for measuring distances by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflection with a sensor.

Daimler said that the plan includes integrating Torc’s self-driving system, along with Luminar’s sensors, into its Freightliner Cascadia truck.

Luminar's founder Austin Russell stated: "Our focus has really been always centered around highway autonomy use cases, which are specifically applicable to passenger vehicles as well as trucks."
