US opens higher as GOP blocks stimulus check proposal

Stock indexes in the United States opened higher on Thursday even after the Republicans in the House of Representatives blocked Democrats' offer to pass $2,000 direct payments to American citizens as part of coronavirus economic relief legislation. The increase of $1,400 for each stimulus check has been put forward by US President Donald Trump. The trading session is set to end early at 1 pm ET, while the markets will be closed tomorrow on Christmas Day.

The Dow Jones gained 0.22% at the open with Caterpillar as the best performer, rising 0.74%. The Nasdaq 100 added 0.19% as IDEXX Laboratories advanced 1.11% at 9:34 am ET. The S&P 500 was up 0.17% as the markets opened, as Tapestry Inc. led the gains, climbing 1.52% at 9:31 am ET.

The euro was 0.09% down against the dollar to trade at 1.21836 at 9:30 am ET, while the pound increased by 0.65%, going for 1.35906 concurrently.
