Austrian Airlines to expand Airbus fleet

Lufthansa Group member Austrian Airlines announced in a press release on Thursday that it will expand its Airbus fleet from 36 to 46 airplanes and phase 18 of its turboprop airplanes out, thereby increasing its flight offering from Vienna by over 10% owing to the Airbus airplanes' larger size.

The news came after the airline completed a restructuring and returned to profit. Making the announcement, its new CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said that "we will invest more than EUR 200 million in the expansion of our continental fleet and thus be able to significantly strengthen our position in Vienna." He added that "at the same time, this should also be considered as a clear challenge to the increasingly tough competition in Vienna, and we are prepared to take further steps to defend our position at our flight hub in Vienna."
