IBM Corp., Merck & Co Inc., Walmart Inc. and KPMG announced on Thursday they have been selected by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop a blockchain solution for identifying and tracking prescription medicines and vaccines distributed within the country.

This solution will be designed to establish a permanent record and may be integrated with the existing supply chain and traceability systems.

The pilot program is being developed under the US Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), which demands higher supply chain security requirements. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019, and results are expected to be published in an FDA DSCSA program report.
