The Boeing Co.'s problematic 737 MAX may be returned to service gradually by government regulators but is still on track to be cleared to fly again in 2019, chief executive Dennis Muilenburg said on Wednesday.

"A phased ungrounding is a possibility," Muilenburg stated at an investor conference in California, despite media reports the aircraft may remain out of service during the Christmas holidays due to disputes with international air-safety authorities.

Boeing's 737 Max has been grounded since March after 346 people lost their lives in two separate crashed caused by a malfunction in the airplane's software.
