COVID-19 vaccine time target 'very aggressive' - Merck CEO

Merck & Co. Chief Executive Ken Frazier revealed on Tuesday he thinks the estimated 12 to 18-month time frame for the development of a coronavirus vaccine is "very aggressive," as clinical trials for vaccines can last up to several years.

"You want to make sure that when you put a vaccine into millions if not billions of people, it is safe," Frazier told the Financial Times, adding that his company's "experience suggests those are very aggressive [targets] compared to other timelines for getting a safe and effective vaccine."

Earlier in the day, Merck & Co. announced it has joined forces with scientific research organization IAVI in an effort to create the coronavirus vaccine.
