Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it will return a third of its Boeing Co. 737 planes to lessors and financiers.

The move is a part of a wider restructuring plan by the airline's new owner Bain Capital, that will also see the company lay off approximately 3,000 employees.

"Once demand returns, it remains our goal to grow our fleet to 75 Boeing 737 aircraft," the spokesperson for the company said, adding that Virgin renegotiated financing terms for the remaining 737 planes.
