The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that the European Union can impose tariffs on $4 billion worth of American products as countermeasures for the United States government aid to Boeing, several media outlets reported on Wednesday.

The EU had requested to slap tariffs on $12 billion worth of US goods. According to Bloomberg, the WTO concluded that the US Boeing subsidies were illegal but only allowed tariffs on a third of what the EU asked for.

Last year, the WTO allowed the US to impose duties on $7.5 billion worth of European goods in retaliation for the bloc's Airbus subsidies.
