Europe closes mostly higher, Fed meeting in focus

European equities finished trading mostly with gains on Monday as investors anticipate the Federal Reserve's policy meeting later this week. While the Fed is not expected to cut rates this Wednesday, markets will be looking for signals from Chairman Jay Powell on how the central bank will react to low inflation.

Meanwhile, a speech by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi in Sintra, Portugal, is awaited later in the day as well.

The DAX fell 0.09% at the end of trading, dragged lower by Lufthansa plummeting over 11%. In Paris, the CAC 40 gained 0.43% as Airbus rose over 2%. The FTSE 100 added 0.16%; Hikma Pharmaceuticals led the gains as it climbed 3.34%. The euro advanced 0.21% against the dollar at 5:50 pm CET, buying 1.1232, while the pound declined 0.24% versus the greenback, going for 1.2563.
