Sterling soars after Johnson-Varadkar statement

The British pound surged on Thursday after United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar released a joint statement which emphasized that a "pathway" to a mutual agreement regarding the Irish backstop issue in Brexit negotiations could be envisaged.

Sterling increased 0.63% against the dollar to reach 1.22842 at 4:53 pm CET while the euro fell 0.26% compared to the pound, selling for 0.89658 a minute later. The British currency added 1.15% against the yen, going for 132.69150 at 4:56 pm CET.
