UK describes trade talks with EU as 'constructive'

Talks on the future economic relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union were "constructive," a Downing Street spokesperson said on Thursday after the two sides concluded their first round of trade negotiations after London's exit from the bloc.

However, the UK government described the upcoming negotiations as "tough" and confirmed earlier comments by EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier that strong differences exist on "fishing, governance, criminal justice and the so-called ‘level playing field’."

The next round of talks will be held on March 18 while the UK's departure from the EU's single market and customs union will take place on January 1 next year.
