Euro area industrial output up by 2.3% in January

Seasonally adjusted industrial production in the euro area increased by 2.3% in January on a monthly basis, according to the latest data published by Eurostat on Thursday. EU-wide, industrial production rose by 2.0% in the first month of 2020.

The largest increase was seen in the production of intermediate goods, 3.2%, followed by capital and non-durable consumer goods, 2.6% and 0.8%, respectively. Energy production declined by 0.1% compared to December 2019.

Year-over-year, industrial output decreased by 1.9% in the Eurozone and 1.5% in the whole of the EU.

The highest increases in industrial production were observed in Ireland 5.7%, Hungary 4.6%, and Slovakia 4.5%, while the decrease was the largest in Denmark, Latvia, and Lithuania, down 2.1%, 1.9%, and 1.8%, respectively.
