The British pound fell against the euro and the dollar on Friday following comments from the European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Following the third round of Brexit talks, Barnier told reporters the discussions with the United Kingdom were "disappointing," adding that Brussels would be stepping up no-deal preparations as he is not "optimistic" about the prospects of reaching an agreement on time.

Sterling lost 0.59% against the greenback at 2:37 pm CET, buying $1.21574. A minute later, the euro strengthened 0.67% versus the pound, going for £0.88898.
