US stocks close lower with data, earnings in focus

United States markets finished Thursday's trading session in the red after the Labor Department's initial jobless claims report showed an unexpected increase. Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that the lower chamber of Congress will vote on the relief bill next week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.38% at the end of the session. Walmart Inc. was the worst performer, falling 6.48% on earnings. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.45%, with Synopsys Inc. surrendering 4.51%. The S&P 500 was down 0.44% as Albermarle Corp. tumbling 10.17%.

The euro jumped 0.41% against the dollar at 3:59 pm ET, changing hands for $1.20920.
