US markets open higher on data, vaccine optimism

Major stock indexes in the United States started trading in the green on Friday, fueled by the generally optimistic Federal Reserve and the progress of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. On data, the Census Bureau reported housing starts surged by 19.4% from February. Later today, investors can expect the release of the consumer sentiment report from the Michigan University and the oil rig count from Baker Hughes.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.44%, while the S&P 500 jumped 0.34%. Amgen Inc was the best performer on the first, increasing 1.22% while PPG Industries Inc. surged 10.36% on the second index. The Nasdaq 100 opened flat but soon slipped below the flatline with Splunk Inc.'s shares dropping the most, trading 6.51% in the red.

The euro grew 0.12% against the dollar at 9:29 am ET to sell for 1.19831.
