Europe closes mixed as investors monitor pandemic

European markets closed mixed on Monday as investors continued to monitor the coronavirus pandemic and economic recovery from the crisis. Major indices on European stock markets hit record highs last week amid the progress being made in COVID-19 vaccinations.

Across the Atlantic, stocks traded lower as tech shares led the selloff on Wall Street which also ended the previous week on a high note.

The DAX dropped 0.59% as the session finished. Covestro led the losses in Frankfurt as Covestro tumbled 4.65%. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 gained 0.15% at the close as Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield jumped over 2%. The FTSE 100 fell 0.23% at the end of trading in London; Melrose Industries was the weakest performer following news that the company agreed to sell Nortek Air Management to Madison Industries for £2.62 billion. The euro climbed 0.40% against the dollar at 5:45 pm CET, buying 1.20285.
