Merkel follows Macron, tells US to export vaccines

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Saturday on the United States to export jabs against COVID-19 made on its soil "now that a further part of the American population has been vaccinated."

"I hope that we can come to a free exchange of components and an opening of the market for vaccines," Merkel said. She also stressed the European Union has exported a large portion of jabs made on its territory and that that should "be the rule."

Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron made the same call, noting that the EU has been "the largest producer of vaccines and the most open continent." Germany previously rejected the US's proposal about waiving patent protections of vaccines, saying that intellectual property is not an issue when it comes to the pace of inoculation against COVID-19.
