UK to look into Google, Apple mobile ecosystems

The United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Tuesday that they are looking into whether Apple Inc. and Google LLC's mobile ecosystems are hurting competition across multiple digital markets.

According to the watchdog, the two companies have an "effective duopoly" over the supply of mobile operating systems, app stores, web browsers, and other smart devices, and it is concerned that this could lead to "reduced innovation across the sector," with consumers ultimately paying higher prices for services.

Additionally, the probe will also look into the hold that the two tech giants have over other businesses, such as app developers, that rely on them to market their products to customers through their platform. The study will be part of a broader program of the regulator's work, as it plans to establish a new pro-competition regulatory regime for digital markets.
