Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) AG announced on Wednesday it has started testing its vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell drive train on the roads to determine how "the CO2-free drive train, model-specific chassis technology and vehicle electronics systems work together under real-life conditions."

"Hydrogen fuel cell technology can be an attractive option for sustainable drive trains – especially in larger vehicle classes," Frank Weber, member of BMW's Management Board, stated. "That is why road testing of near-standard vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell drive train is an important milestone in our research and development efforts."

The company previously announced it is planning to double its planned production of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2021 and raise its overall distribution of them by 20% by 2023.
