The number of jobs in the United States private sector rose by 568,000 in September compared to August, according to the National Employment Report released by Automatic Data Processing Inc. (ADP) on Wednesday. The figure topped market expectations.

The increase was mostly driven by large companies, where 390,000 new employees were hired in September. Midsized businesses followed with 115,000 jobs added, while small firms documented 63,000 new workers. The service-providing sector reported 466,000 new jobs, while the workforce in the goods-producing sector grew by 102,000, compared to the previous month.

"Leisure and hospitality remains one of the biggest beneficiaries to the recovery, yet hiring is still heavily impacted by the trajectory of the pandemic, especially for small firms. Current bottlenecks in hiring should fade as the health conditions tied to the COVID-19 variant continue to improve, setting the stage for solid job gains in the coming months," ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson commented in the report.
