US shares drop, Dow loses over 450 points

Stock indexes in the United States fell at the start of the session on Monday as the Omicron variant continued to cause uncertainty and concern. White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci warned patients infected by the highly transmissible variant could overwhelm the hospital system. Meanwhile, centrist Democratic Senator Joe Manchin stated he will not vote for the Build Back Better Act, casting doubts on whether the legislation could be adopted.

The Dow Jones lost 1.30% or 463 points at 9:30 am ET, with the Goldman Sachs Group Inc. dropping 2.61%. The Nasdaq 100 was down 1.38% as Pinduoduo plummeted 6.01%. The S&P 500 fell by 1.29%, led by Devon Energy Corp., which slumped 8.96%.

The euro gained 0.52% compared to the dollar, selling for 1.12948 at 9:34 am ET.
