US opens slightly lower on last trading day in 2021

Major United States stock markets opened slightly lower on Friday, the last trading session before 2022. The rise in COVID-19 infections weighed on US airlines, with the Federal Aviation Administration reportedly warning of further flight cancelations due to staff shortages. Meanwhile, Tesla was forced to recall 200,000 vehicles in China due to potential defects. In international politics, US President Joe Biden spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing the need to lower the risk of nuclear proliferation and confrontation.

The Dow Jones lost 0.08% at 9:30 am ET as Visa Inc. declined by 0.94%. The Nasdaq 100 fell by 0.07% at the same time, with Pinduoduo dropping 0.99%. The S&P 500 was down by 0.09%, led by West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. which decreased by 0.78%.

The euro traded 0.27% higher compared to the dollar and sold for 1.13496 at 9:31 am ET.
