US closes mostly lower as Ukraine tensions peak

Major stock markets in the United States closed mostly lower on Monday after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was informed Russia is expected to invade his country on February 16. The Department of State then confirmed it has moved the US embassy in Ukraine from Kiev to Lviv. Later, the White House commented Russia's invasion could start at "any time."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.50% or 172 points lower as Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. decreased by 2.75%. The S&P 500 declined by 0.39%, with Moderna Inc. sinking by 11.68%. On the other hand, the Nasdaq 100 went up by 0.10% as Splunk Inc. surged by 9.13%.

The euro lost 0.40% to the dollar at 3:59 pm ET to sell for $1.12959.
